First Lady Melania Trump to Keynote Opioid Awareness Speech in Baltimore
First Lady Melania Trump will visit Baltimore today for the B’MORE Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness presented by the Drug Enforcement Agency.
The event is hosted by the DEA 360 Campaign and the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, and it's purpose is to promote healthy choices and educate students about the dangers of opioid use.
The event will consist of 2,500 middle/high school students from across the Baltimore area.
According to the Baltimore City Health Department, in 2018, the city saw 761 drug and alcohol-related intoxication deaths, 692 of which were opioid-related. That number was more than double the number of people who died of homicide. The CDC estimates from 1999-2018 more than 400,000 people have died from overdoses, making it the leading cause of injury-related deaths in the United States.
U.S. Attorney Robert Hur, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby and Rapper Dee-1 are also expected to speak at the event today.
