Aerosol Spray-Fire Pit Explosion Leaves Pasadena Teen Critically Injured, Fire Officials Say

Use of an aerosol spray around a fire pit in Pasadena has left one teen with life threatening injuries, Anne Arundel County Fire officials said today.

Shortly after 2:00pm  today, fire fighters responded to a home in the 1300 block of Boxgrove Court.  Upon arrival, first responders located a 17 year old male with injuries consistent with being burned.  The teen had critical and possibly life threatening injuries, including burns to the front of his entire body. He was transported to the Johns Hopkins Burn Center in Baltimore for treatment.

Investigators believe the explosion occurred while the victim and another teen were using aerosol cans near a fire pit in the backyard of the home.

In an emailed statement to Report Annapolis, a department spokesperson spoke to the dangers of using chemicals near open flames. "While backyard fire pits are a legal and enjoyable way to enjoy the outdoors, it is important to remember that
aerosol cans contain flammable chemicals and should never be used near open flames," the spokesperson said.
