Annapolis Man Faces Misdemeanor Charges After Escaping Police Custody Led to Lockdown of Area Schools

An Annapolis man is facing misdemeanor charges after allegedly escaping police custody while being transported to the county jail from an area hospital, authorities said yesterday.

According to a statement released by an Annapolis Police Department spokesperson, authorities from multiple agencies began pursuing the escaped man shortly before noon on Thursday, July 11. "Annapolis Police, Anne Arundel County Police, Maryland State Police, Anne Arundel County Police Aviation Unit, and U.S. Marshals Task Force Officers conducted joint operations and established unified Command," the statement said.  ""Mr. Herold was recaptured at approximately 1:30 pm. He is currently being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center. There is no ongoing threat to the public."

The incident prompted Anne Arundel County Public Schools to temporarily lock down all schools in the Annapolis cluster, officials said.

Mr. Herold has been charged with second degree escape and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.  Bail was denied on those charges during a bond review hearing this morning.
