Suspect Sought After Meade High Stabbing Left School on Lockdown, Officials Say

A stabbing at Meade High School caused a lockdown on campus today.

During a press conference, law enforcement officials stated that the victim was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he remains conscious and alert, in stable but serious condition.

Authorities reported that the suspect or suspects have not been identified, but the attacker is believed to have been a student. Investigators have not found the weapon, but they believe the incident was isolated. Detectives are pursuing leads while the school remains on lockdown.

Pupils who were provided with lunch and had use of the restroom stayed in their classrooms until 3:18 p.m. Families were not allowed to collect their children from school until then, and all afterschool activities scheduled at Meade High for Thursday were canceled.

Officials indicated that a student resource officer stationed at the school notified authorities of the stabbing at 10:09 a.m. Western District patrol officers responded, assisting the SRO and school staff in providing life-saving measures for the victim in the hallway.

"Children should be able to attend school without fear of violent assault or harm, protected by our education system," Chief Awad said.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Bedell promised to hold those responsible accountable, as outlined in the student code of conduct. "We will take the necessary actions," Bedell assured. "We guarantee that consequences will be faced by anyone involved."

The stabbing occurred immediately after a period change. Students were relocated to classrooms, and the school was placed on lockdown to enable first responders to act unimpeded.
