Winter Weather Watch: Annapolis Expects Icy Conditions Thursday
The City of Annapolis is closely monitoring a dynamic weather pattern expected to impact the area over the coming days, bringing a mix of precipitation including rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow.
The initial phase of this weather system will bring rain, sleet, and freezing rain overnight Wednesday (Feb. 5) into Thursday (Feb. 6). Depending on overnight low temperatures, hazardous icy conditions may develop during the morning rush hour on Thursday, with a forecasted overnight low of 31°F.
A second round of weather is anticipated on Saturday (Feb. 8), potentially involving a wintry mix, followed by a third round on Monday (Feb. 10) into Tuesday (Feb. 11), which may bring wintry precipitation and accumulating snow. Travel disruptions are possible with all three winter weather scenarios.
The Annapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) is fully prepared, with plow and treat crews scheduled to begin operations at midnight on Wednesday into Thursday, applying brine and salt throughout the morning hours. Residents are advised to avoid travel during the storm, if possible, to allow crews sufficient time to perform their duties. If travel is unavoidable, drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution and reduce speed in potentially icy conditions. Black ice poses a significant hazard, particularly on bridges and overpasses, due to its near-invisibility.
Residents are recommended to apply deicing agents, brine, or salt to sidewalks and driveways overnight to lower the freezing point of water and facilitate faster melting of ice and snow.
